Angel Gomes caught the eye on his first start for England on Tuesday night and there is already a string of clubs ready to battle it out for his signature next summer.
The 24-year-old is a Manchester United academy graduate but after leaving Old Trafford it has been his performances for Lille that earned him a place in the England squad.
Interim manager Lee Carsley gave him his debut as a substitute against Republic of Ireland and then his first start in the 2-0 win over Finland at Wembley.
The midfielder impressed in the middle of the park and there is little surprise that clubs are circling given his contract status.
Gomes is out of contract at the end of the season, with the deal he signed at Lille in 2020 expiring in 2025 and little suggestion that he plans to renew.
Now an England international and available on a free transfer, clubs are expected to be flocking for his signature.
The Sun reports that Newcastle have already made Gomes their number one target, while Liverpool, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund all fancy a move for the former Manchester United man.
The report states that Newcastle are even considering making a bid in January in order to beat the competition to the signing.
Carsley handed Gomes his first senior caps after managing him for England Under-21s and being thoroughly impressed by his footballing knowledge and tactical insight.
‘He loves football, he watches football, he’s interested in tactics,’ Carsley said of Gomes. ‘He knows all the players in any league.
‘If you ask him for any feedback, you need to be prepared that he’s going to give you some feedback on the session, or how we’re going to build up, or the positions.
‘He’ll often say about some build-ups he’s done with other clubs, or what he’s played against, because he’s obviously playing in France, so he sees different things.’
