Liverpool and the Scotland Under-21 team defender Calvin Ramsay has signed a loan deal with League One team Wigan Athletic for the 2024–2025 season.

Ramsay will be attempting to put his fitness issues behind him at Wigan as Liverpool made an agreement to allow the Scotsman to depart on loan for a third time, rather than integrating him into the first team for Arne Slot’s inaugural season.

The right-back moved from Aberdeen to Liverpool back in 2022, but an injury ended his season there after only two games played in his debut season.

After that, in the beginning of 2023–2024, Ramsay went on loan to Championship team Preston before concluding the campaign with Bolton Wanderers.

Liverpool have agreed a year long loan with Wigan and the defender was delighted to make the move.

He told the official Wigan website:

“I am over the moon. It happened quickly and I met the manager (Shaun Maloney) two weeks ago.

“I had a really good conversation, and there was an instant connection. I’m excited for the start of the season.

“When I was driving to the training ground, there was a real excitement, and I am hungry to get going and show everyone what I can do. It’s a good opportunity at a good club, and I am raring to go.”

Calvin Ramsay is a long way away from breaking into the Liverpool starting line-up.

The defender deserves playing time and Wigan can provide that.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley already present at the club, it is a wise move from the Reds to send the midfielder out on loan to gain experience.

Liverpool defender can gain experience with loan move

It is too early for the defender to break into Arne Slot’s team next season and spending some time away from the spotlight at Liverpool to develop his game further will help him in the future.

Ramsay will play at Brick Community Stadium for the 2024–2025 season.

More importantly, he will start preseason action alongside Shaun Maloney’s team.

The two teams have inked three such deals in the last 12 months; Luke Chambers and James Balagizi have both spent time at Wigan.
