But two quickfire goals from Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones saw the tie turn on its head with Jurgen Klopp's men now favourites to reach Wembley.
Nunez made an instant impact as a substitute and created both goals, inspiring the comeback win.
After the full-time whistle, as the teams returned to their dressing rooms, the Liverpool players were understandably jubilant.
But Nunez, while smiling it must be said, could be heard saying: "Loco, no quiere entrar la pelota nomas," which loosely translates to: "Brother, the ball just doesn’t want to go in."
The Uruguay international finished the match with an xG of 0.76 while Bernd Leno pulled off a wonder save to deny him during the match.
Klopp was left in disbelief and said after: “I don’t know how to explain the Darwin situation… you cannot be more unlucky than he was.
“He plays outstanding."

One fan responded by saying: "He did nothing wrong with his finishing today. On target. Hard and low. Strong header. Every chance could’ve gone in. Keeper just said no so unlucky haha. God I love Darwin so much."
Another wrote: "I just know he will keep working hard for it and he will get there eventually."
And a third said: "Yet he still keeps going regardless, head never drops."
Nunez was signed from Benfica in the summer of 2022 but has yet to set the world alight at Anfield, joining for a fee of £64million.
In his first season in the Premier League, he finished the season with nine goals and this term he has just five.
Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has been praised for his work rate and perseverance as he looks to impress Klopp.
