According to journalist Sergi Sole, writing for Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz has expressed an interest in joining Barcelona. However, the financial realities at Barcelona could prove to be a significant hurdle in making this dream a reality.

It must be noted that Diaz is not just another name on Barcelona’s wish list; he is a top alternative to Nico Williams, who has been the club’s primary target following his impressive performances at the recent Euro Cup.

Before the tournament in Germany, Barcelona had already identified Diaz as one of the key players they were considering to reinforce the left wing.

As Nico continues to deliberate on his future, there is a strong belief among Barcelona’s leadership that if he decides against a move, they should shift their focus entirely to Diaz.

A lot of inaccuracies in the market

Despite reports suggesting that Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, has met with Diaz’s representatives, this is not entirely accurate.

However, Barcelona are well-informed about the player’s situation. Diaz’s affection for Barcelona is no secret; in fact, his father admitted in 2023 that his son is a Barcelona fan and dreams of wearing the iconic Blaugrana shirt.

The knowledge that a player of Diaz’s calibre is eager to join the club is undoubtedly tempting for Barcelona, but the financial aspect cannot be ignored.

Liverpool posing a problem

Diaz, who is 27 years old and contracted with Liverpool until 2027, is understandably interested in a move to Barcelona. Yet, the club’s financial situation is precarious.

Barcelona have struggled to register all their players for the start of the league, a clear indication of their economic challenges. The club had meticulously planned to secure Nico, with a budget of around €55-60 million set aside for the signing.

However, acquiring Diaz could demand a much higher fee, especially considering Liverpool’s likely stance.

Liverpool are expected to ask for more than the €58 million release clause attached to Nico, which includes an additional €4 million due to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) clause.

Barcelona are aware that they might not be able to match the financial power of other clubs, such as Manchester City, who could potentially enter the race for Diaz and offer more lucrative deals.
