Liverpool considered appointing Ruben Amorim before his move to Manchester United but rejected the Portuguese for two key reasons, according to reports.
Jurgen Klopp’s surprise decision to leave Anfield at the end of last season forced Liverpool to make their first managerial change in over eight years.
Liverpool had made Xabi Alonso one of their top targets, while Amorim was also among the candidates considered before the club ended up agreeing a deal with Arne Slot, who was just finishing his third season at Feyenoord.
But according to The Athletic, Liverpool’s hierarchy decided against Amorim as they felt his 3-4-3 system would not suit the squad that Klopp had left behind.
The report adds that Liverpool ‘had doubts’ about whether Amorim’s playing style would appeal to the Anfield crowd.
However, a Liverpool delegation sent to the Netherlands was said to have been impressed by how well Slot’s brand of football was received by Feyenoord’s supporters.
Slot has been quick to make an impact at Liverpool as his side currently sit two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand.
Liverpool also sit top of the Champions League table having won all six of their games so far, including impressive victories over AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid.
Amorim, meanwhile, has endured a rocky start after being appointed as Erik ten Hag’s successor last month.
After a 1-1 draw with Ipswich in Amorim’s first game in charge, United beat Bodo/Glimt and Everton before losing back-to-back games to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.
United got back on track last week with a win against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League before Amad Diallo snatched a late 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday.
