Liverpool are interested in signing the Porto midfielder Alan Varela.

The 22-year-old Argentine defensive midfielder has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks and journalist Luis Fregossi has now revealed that Liverpool have already made contact with Porto regarding a move for the South American.

They would be willing to submit a substantial offer for his services. The midfielder has a €70 million release in his contract, and it will be interesting to see if Liverpool are prepared to pay up.

Varela has been a key player for Porto since joining the club and Liverpool could use a quality defensive midfielder like him. They tried to sign players like Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia at the start of the season. The Reds ended up signing Wataru Endo after failing to land their other targets. Endo has done quite well for Liverpool this season, but he is in his 30s and Liverpool need a younger alternative.

The Argentina midfielder would be a quality long-term addition for Liverpool and it remains to be seen whether they are ready to pay a premium for him. The 22-year-old could easily justify the investment in the coming seasons and establish himself as a player for the club.

Liverpool need to sign Alan Varela

Liverpool need someone who can break up opposition attacks and shield the back four. The 22-year-old could form a quality partnership with his compatriot Alexis Mac Allister at the heart of the Liverpool midfield.

The opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world will be quite tempting for Varela and he will hope that the two clubs can secure an agreement soon.

Liverpool have a proven track track out when it comes to nurturing talented young players and they could help the Argentine midfielder fulfil his tremendous potential. Regular football in England could accelerate his development as well.
