Liverpool have made the first move to replace Jurgen Klopp ahead of the 2024/25 campaign but the Reds face competition for the candidate.

Klopp shocked the football world last month when he announced that he would be leaving the Merseyside club at the end of the season and it has left Liverpool beginning their search for the German’s replacement.

According to Footmercato, the Premier League giants have made contact with their first candidate and it is Bayer Leverkusen’s, Xabi Alonso.

The report says that the former Liverpool star is the favourite to take over at Anfield but at present, he will be concentrating on guiding Leverkusen towards the Bundesliga title.

Liverpool approach Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso

Alonso’s team are currently leading the German league by five points after hammering title rivals Bayern Munich 3-0 on Saturday.

The German giants are also keeping an eye on the Spanish coach with Footmercato reporting that Bayern Munich’s board really like the Leverkusen coach.

With three trophies still to play for this season, it is hard to think Alonso is putting much thought into his next career move but it is clear that several of Europe’s biggest clubs have an eye on recruiting him in the near future.
