Liverpool are closing in on their first signing of the Arne Slot era after agreeing a £30 million transfer fee for Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Mamardashvili is reportedly set to undergo a medical in Spain to complete the move but will remain at Valencia on loan for the rest of the season.

The keeper, who impressed for Georgia at Euro 2024, will then arrive at Anfield next season to provide competition for Alisson in goal.

The deal marks the first incoming for Liverpool under new manager Slot after their efforts to sign Marin Zubimendi were thwarted when the Real Sociedad midfielder turned down the move to Anfield.

Mamardashvili came through Dinamo Tbilisi’s academy ranks as a youngster and sealed a move to Valencia in 2021 on a short-term deal.

After impressing then-manager Jose Bordalas, Mamardashvili secured himself a place in Valencia’s starting XI to face Getefa on the opening day of the 2021/22 season.

Since his arrival at the Mestalla, Mamardashvili has gone on to make more than 100 appearances in all competitions for the Los Ches.

Speaking last week prior to their 2-0 home win against Brentford, Slot said he was not concerned about the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market.

‘No, because I trust the team. I’ve said many times before, I inherited a real good team, a team of many young players as well,’ he said.

‘I think we all know that especially young players can develop at the ages they are on at the moment, so we just try to work as hard as we can with them and we trust them a lot.

‘They’ve proven last week that they earned this trust and I’m hoping that they show the same on Sunday again.’

The club have seen outgoings, though, with young duo Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg joining Brentford, while Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip left on free transfers.

Versatile defender Joe Gomez has also been linked with an exit having been left out of the squad for their opening-day victory over Ipswich Town.
