Football pundit and former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has told the Reds what they need to do if they want to win the Premier League title this season.
The Merseyside club is the only team not only in England but in Europe’s top five leagues not to sign a new player this summer.
It has been an eventful summer at Anfield despite the club failing to sign a new player.
The club lost manager Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season and welcomed new manager Arne Slot.
Then started their transfer saga with Anthony Gordon that failed to materialise in the end.
Following that, they came close to completing the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi but the Spaniard rejected the move at the last minute and decided to stay at his boyhood club.
The Reds are now certain to start the new season without a fresh face at the club but Murphy feels that they need two additions to their squad if they want to win the league title.
He told talkSPORT:
‘I expect them to be top four, but I don’t think they’ll overcome City. I don’t think [they can win it with this squad].
‘They would be better [with two new significant signings] – I think a centre-half and a holding midfielder.
Liverpoo boss Arne Slot is still waiting for his first signing.‘When you look at the two best teams in the country last year with Rodri and [Declan] Rice, Liverpool don’t have that.
‘And although [Wataru] Endo and [Alexis] MacAllister did well in certain games and certain periods, that consistent person in the middle of the pitch who’s physically dominant and able to control games like those two do, Liverpool don’t really have.
‘They will be hugely disappointed that they didn’t get Zubimendi because they thought that was over the line. That’s unlike Liverpool not to get the deal done.
‘They lost out on [Romeo] Lavia and [Moises] Caicedo last year and now they’ve lost out to Zubimendi as well. It’s not great, especially when they need a player in that position.’
The former Liverpool midfielder thinks Slot’s team can make it to the top four of the Premier League.
Danny Murphy wants Liverpool to sign a midfielder
He has explained the difference between Liverpool and last season’s title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal, who both have a solid midfield presence in Rodri and Rice respectively.
Not many would disagree with Murphy and it felt evident watching the Reds last season that these two positions need to be addressed this summer.
Liverpool’s failure to do so could cost them the league title as all their other bases in the squad are covered.
