The Greater Accra Poultry and Livestock Sellers and the June Fourth Market Traders’ Association have appealed to the President to intervene in the decision of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) to evict them from their land.
According to the two associations, they have a lease agreement of 25 years with the GRDA which spans from May 1, 2000, to May 1, 2025.
According to the Secretary of the two associations, Mr Thomas Agbehazi: “We received a letter from the Authority indicating that the lease agreement had long expired and that the lease period was from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2022.
“We applied for our licence status to be changed to a lease hold status and after satisfying all the necessary requirements of the railway’s authorities a lease of 25 years was granted to us, which took effect from May 1, 2000 and expected to expire on May 1 2025,” he said.
At a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Agbehazi said their members were taken by surprise when “we received a letter from the authorities signed again by Madam Susana Delali Kudjoe indicating our lease with the railways authorities has expired explaining that we had a lease with the railway’s authorities dated January 1, 1998, for a period of 25 years, hence our lease expired on December 30, 2022.”
According to him, GRDA wrote a letter to them signed by the current Deputy Chief Executive Officer, General services, Mrs Susana Delali Akosua Kudjoe, to vacate the land by May 15 this year.
Mr Agbehazi described the eviction notice by GRDA as a danger looming to the economic wellbeing and future of hundreds of people who plied their trade and earn a living in both markets.
