EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video‘s latest Indian original is a docu-series exploring six real-life romances.
Love Storiyaan will launch globally on Valentines Day as a “heart-warming chronicle of real-life love stories.” Six directors — Akshay Indikar, Archana Phadke, Collin D’Cunha, Hardik Mehta, Shazia Iqbal, and Vivek Soni — have filmed.
The show was originally titled India Love Story and was unveiled in April 2022 at a content showcase in Mumbai.
In fact, the series is inspired by India Love Project, a social media community that celebrates love in its various forms that former journalists Priya Ramani, Samar Halarnkar, and Niloufer Venkatraman founded. Coffee with Karan and Showtime maker Dharmatic Entertainment is producing, with Somen Mishra development the concept. Mishra, Dharmatic bosses Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta are exec producers.
Mishra noted that each episode of Love Storiyaan was filmed by a director “who has a personal connection to it, which has allowed them to bring in their own insights and nuances to each story.”
“Much like its inspiration, India Love Project, Love Storiyaan is a celebration of love in its most authentic and diverse forms,” he added.
The series is among the first Prime Video has unveiled out of Asia since we revealed it was shutting down its original production team in Singapore and moving to an acquisitions model, as part of a global headcount reduction aimed at cutting costs.
However, India was left untouched by the plan, and Aparna Purohit, Head of Originals, India and Southeast Asia, was among those who remained with Prime Video.
Today, she said: “Love Storiyaan is a testament to Prime Video’s unwavering commitment to crafting narratives that not only mirror the rich diversity of our audience but also deeply resonate with their hearts. This series opens a door to authentic and uplifting stories of love that transcend societal boundaries and challenge norms. It intricately intertwines a delicate tapestry, certain to tug at the viewers’ heartstrings for its resonant storytelling.”
Love Storyiaan also marks the latest project Indian multi-hyphenate Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has with Prime Video. Divisions of the company have previously made Amazon Original films such as Aye Watan… Mere Watan and series such as Call Me Bae, both of which were unveiled at the same time as Love Storyiaan in April 2022. At the same Prime Video event, Amazon and Dharmatic’s parent company, Dharma Productions, announced a film output deal.
Purohit added: “The series also marks our first collaboration with Dharmatic Entertainment, further extending our incredibly successful partnership with Dharma Productions. Karan, Apoorva, Somen and each of the directors have breathed life into these special stories. We hope, this Valentine’s Day, they invoke the same feelings of hope, happiness and joy in our customers as they did for us.”
