Javier Mascherano says Luis Diaz is a ‘great player’ and hopes the forward stays on at Liverpool amid rumours he could leave to join Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Diaz completed a £37.5million move to Liverpool back in 2022 and has gone on to score 24 goals in 89 games for the Reds, helping the club win an FA Cup, two Carabao Cup titles and a Community Shield.
However, speculation has been mounting that Diaz could be set for the exit door at the end of the campaign, with Ligue 1 champions PSG credited a with a strong interest in the 27-year-old attacker.
It’s understood Barcelona have also been keeping tabs on Diaz’s situation, though a move could prove tricky for the Catalan giants given their difficult financial situation.
Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure has only added to the uncertainty and Diaz’s father fuelled rumours that the Colombian could be on his way out of Anfield last month, talking up a move to Spain.
‘There was never anything serious with Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid,’ Diaz senior told Cadena Ser.
‘Liverpool were always more determined and concrete to sign Luis. We haven’t lost our hope yet… Luis is playing well and Spanish clubs are always active in the market.’
Diaz still has over three years remaining on his current deal at Anfield and Liverpool view the Colombia international as an integral player for the future, in the post-Klopp era.
According to Mascherano, Diaz is a perfect fit for Liverpool and the club should be doing everything in their power to ensure the forward stays put.
‘He is a great player, very decisive when it comes to playing, especially in one-on-one duels,’ Mascherano told Colombia’s Antena 2.
‘The truth is that I think he has arrived at a team that fits him just right.’
The ex-Liverpool, Barcelona and Argentina midfielder added: ‘If there is one thing about Liverpool it is that it adores players like Luis Diaz who have that strength and leave everything on the field.
‘That is why I think he fits in exactly where he has arrived.’
