Real Madrid star Luka Modric has won a court case against the Spanish tax authorities, allowing him to recover a sum of 3.5 million euros
€3.5M is not negligible, even for a player of Luka Modric’s stature. The 38-year-old had been accused of fraud by the tax authorities, but had pleaded his innocence. The case dates back to his departure from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, when the tax office claimed his tax residence was in Spain, while Modric maintained it was in the UK.
The initial issue concerned his income of €1.6 million from Real Madrid, but an additional €1 million was also demanded in 2013 and 2014 for payments made to agents, which the tax office considered to be in the player’s name.
Modric was also ordered to pay a fine of 900,000 euros on top of the 2.6 million euros he was owed, but the judge ruled in favor of the Croatian captain. El Mundo reported, and the veteran becomes the latest to do battle with Spanish tax authorities, following a long line of high-profile footballers from Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
