12 Luke Shaw and Bukayo Saka are currently representing England at Euro 2024.
The pair were interviewed in the England camp after booking their place in the semi-finals after a penalty shootout win over Switzerland.
Shaw took to the pitch in a competitive game for the first time in over four months against Switzerland, while Saka scored a decisive equaliser during Saturday’s quarter-final clash, forcing extra-time and penalties.
The Arsenal forward later stepped up to score a spot-kick to help the Three Lions set up a semi-final clash against the Netherlands.
While reflecting on the game, Saka was asked to name where this ranked in his career and selected scoring against United as his favourite strike. Keep in mind Saka has scored three goals against United during his career.
This prompted the following response from Shaw (via England national team’s YouTube channel): “It’s because he supports United, that’s why it’s his favourite. Look at him, he’s trying to do all this lying again!”
Shaw added: “I’m lying? Be honest. We can ask anyone in the squad. He’s so bad [at lying].”
Interestingly, Saka spoke about Old Trafford being his favourite opposition ground to play at when speaking to Sky Sports in May: “When you start from outside, growing up watching football, the special nights you’ve seen in the Premier League and Champions League at Old Trafford, it was nice to be on the pitch and to play,” said the England international of his memories at the home of the Red Devils. “I have played there a few times now and I think it is definitely my favourite stadium to play in.”
Asked if there is a special feeling to the Arsenal versus United fixture, Saka stated: “There is. The two teams are so big in English history and they have had rivalries for many, many years.
“Every time I play against them, I understand that – from growing up – Arsenal fans and Man United fans are always going at each other. I understand it. It is always a big, big game – and it will be on Sunday. I am looking forward to it and I always enjoy to play game like this.”
Since Saka is a Red, maybe we should try a cheeky bid in the next year or two once we’re back committing for titles. Arsenal may begin to slide from *second place* in that time.
