What’s worse than M3GAN, the homicidal toy robot who defends kids with a murderous wrath? How about an android that loves you to death? (And no, this isn’t the Megan Fox movie Subservience you probably heard about last week.)

Blumhouse announced its plans for a spinoff movie dubbed Soulm8te back in June, and Deadline reports the movie now has its lead actor in Lily Sullivan. Best known for Evil Dead Rise and Monolith, the Australian star will play the currently unnamed android bought by a widower following the death of his wife. As man and machine get closer, things begin to go real south real fast for the man and everyone else involved. At time of writing, Sullivan is the only role that’s been locked down, and a production date for the movie hasn’t been set.

Directed by You Are Not My Mother’s Kate Dolan, Soulm8te’s been previously described as being in the vein of domestic thrillers from back in the ’90s. The original M3GAN movie had thoughts on its mind about toys and technology, so it’ll be interesting to see how this movie tackles the ways tech has changed how relationships function nowadays. Per BloodyDisgusting, Dolan recently called it “an exploration of relationships and loneliness. Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”

In the immediate future, this M3GAN Cinematic Universe will continue with M3GAN 2.0, due out in June 2025. Production started back in July, and we’ll no doubt get some teases of what that mechanical demon’s up to soon enough. Knowing how Blumhouse operates, Soulm8te is just the beginning: there’s surely other technological terrors that are waiting to be unearthed for this franchise in the years to come.
