EXCLUSIVE: Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange is the New Black) has been cast in Netflix‘s hit psychological drama You for the show’s fifth and final season.

In a series regular role, Brewer will portray Bronte, an enigmatic and free-spirited playwright who comes to work for Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) at his bookstore. As the two connect over literature and loss, she stokes in him a nostalgia for his former self, causing him to question everything his life has become.

You, based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, revolves around the question, “What would you do for love?” The series follows Joe Goldberg, a man who will do just about anything when love is at stake.

Season 4 was set in London where Joe took on the new identity of Jonathan Moore, an English professor, while following Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) around Europe. Details regarding the focus of Season 5 are being kept under wraps.

Sera Gamble and Greg Berlanti developed You for TV. Executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will co-showrun Season 5. EPs also include Berlanti, Gamble, Sarah Schechter, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo, John Scott, Neil Reynolds and Lee Toland Krieger. The first four seasons of Warner Bros. Television’s You are now streaming globally on Netflix.

Brewer is perhaps best known for portraying Janine in Hulu’s Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale, for which she was nominated for a 2021 statuette in the category of “Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series.” The show is slated to return for its sixth and final season and is based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood.

She will next be seen starring in the thriller Anniversary with Kyle Chandler, Phoebe Dynevor, Diane Lane and Zoey Deutch and in I Live Here Now with Lucy Fry.

Last year, Brewer starred as Sally Bowles in the Olivier Award Winning London production of Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre opposite Callum Scott Howells. Before that, she starred in the Hulu and American High film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise alongside Keean Johnson; Space Oddity, directed and produced by Kyra Sedgwick; Where Are You alongside Anthony Hopkins and Angela Sarafyan; and STX Entertainment’s Hustlers alongside Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer and Julia Stiles.

Additional TV credits include the Netflix original comedy-drama series Orange is the New Black created by Jenji Kohan and produced by Lionsgate Television; Netflix’s Black Mirror; Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove for Netflix; and Bret Easton Ellis’ series The Deleted for Fullscreen, to name a few.
