Magic: The Gathering has recently been on a Fortnite-esque roll, collaborating with big marquee franchises like The Lord of the Rings, Marvel, and Fallout. Now, we’ve just got a new look at its upcoming collaboration with Square Enix’s best-selling role playing series, Final Fantasy.
In a newly uploaded YouTube video, Square Enix producer Shoichi Ichikawa and Wizards of the Coast product architect Zakeel Gordon released a Nintendo Direct-inspired announcement video teasing the collaboration between the huge franchises. In their sneak peek video, Ichikawa revealed that the partnership will include characters from the first Final Fantasy to the recently released Final Fantasy XVI. You can check out their video below.
“We believe that this combination of the epic storytelling of Final Fantasy and the strategic gameplay of Magic: The Gathering will be the most exciting entertainment ever on the table,” Ichikawa said.
“And for us at Wizards of the Coast, Final Fantasy represents a rich universe that is a natural fit for Magic‘s gameplay,” Gordon added.
Arguably, the most important tidbit from the Magic: The Gathering‘s Final Fantasy collab presentation is which characters from its expansive series will get nifty cards. Halfway through the video, Ichikawa revealed that the set would include the following characters: Terra (Final Fantasy VI), Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII), Noctis (Final Fantasy XV), and Cloud (Final Fantasy VII). Ichikawa also teased iconic monsters like behemoths and chocobos will be a part of the set. Here’s a closer look at even more cards that’ll come with the special collab set.
As if fans sat smack dab in the venn diagram of Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy couldn’t be any more excited about the impending collab, Gordon continued to sweeten the pot by revealing that the team-up will feature the “largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever in a single game.”
“You’ll see artwork from Magic artists along with classic illustrations from legendary Final Fantasy artists, as well as brand-new breathtaking pieces made specifically for this set,” Gordon said.
“As a producer and a Magic fan, I’m confident that this set will be absolutely amazing,” Ichikawa said.
Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering‘s collaboration set will release on June 13, 2025.
