EXCLUSIVE: Malia Baker (The Baby-Sitters Club) will executive produce and star in Hair of the Bear, an indie survival drama marking the narrative feature debut of co-directors Alexandre Trudeau and James McLellan.
In the film, Baker plays a teen girl named Tori whose social media-centered life causes her debilitating anxiety. When she refuses to go to school, her concerned mother sends her to stay with her grandfather Benoit (Roy Dupuis) in a remote wilderness cabin. Benoit proceeds to refocus her life on survival skills, until a crisis finds Tori quite literally fighting for her life.
Hair of the Bear is produced by Julijette and Same Adventure Productions in association with levelFILM. Juliette Hagopian is also producing alongside Trudeau and McLellan. In addition to Baker, exec producers include Michael Levine and Roy Dupuis. Pic is slated for release in 2025.
Best known for starring on Netflix’s series The Baby-Sitters Club, based on the children’s novels from Ann M. Martin, Baker has also previously been seen in Nickelodeon’s reimagined horror anthology, Are You Afraid of The Dark?, as well as the recent CBS All Access (now Paramount+) reboot of The Twilight Zone, The Flash, and A Million Little Things. Also seen in the Lifetime movie Caught in His Web, executive produced by Whoopi Goldberg, her other upcoming projects at the moment include Miramax’s dramedy Harvest Moon with Paul Bettany, Carmen Ejogo, and Candice Bergen, and Disney Channel movie The Descendants: The Rise Of Red, which has her sharing a bill with Brandy and Rita Ora.
Previously, Trudeau has helmed docs like The New Great Game, Refuge: A Film About Darfur, and The Wheels of Change.
Baker is repped by The Characters Talent Agency, Entertainment 360, and Granderson Des Rochers; Dupuis by Premier Role.
