However, the Bundesliga giants are reluctant to sell Kimmich this month.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Man City manager Pep Guardiola are known admirers of the 28-year-old.

Kimmich's recent form under Thomas Tuchel has been questioned and the midfielder risked the wrath of his manager in a recent interview.

After being substituted in the 1-0 defeat to Weder Bremen, Kimmich said: "I don’t think the defeat was deserved, but you could tell that Bremen were hungrier [to win] than we were.

"And that must not happen to us at this stage of the season. You don’t get the feeling that we know what was at stake."

It is understood a move for Kimmich in January would cost at least £40million and Premier League clubs have only spent £37m so far combined.

Liverpool could hold an advantage over Manchester City due to good connections Liverpool's sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, holds with the Bundesliga.

The Reds splashed heavily last summer on regenerating their ageing midfield and whilst the results have so far proved positive, boss Klopp appears to be open to further recruitment.
