Manchester United have decided to make a move for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen but they are facing competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
In an attempt to get out of their financial bind, the Spanish giants will essentially be obliged to have a massive clear-out this summer according to Marca.
Man United may be able to take advantage of in their pursuit of Andreas Christensen.
In order to generate revenue and reduce their pay expenditure, Barca must let go of certain players, and Christensen is one of the names selected to be sacrificed.
Several of Man Utd’s existing central defenders are expected to depart in the summer, therefore the team will need at least one elite centre-back.
Due to the expiration of their contracts, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans’ futures are uncertain. Victor Lindelof is also available because he is not in the long term plans of the club.
That leaves the club with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. The English centre-back was close to leaving the club last summer but a move failed to materialise in the last minute. His future at the club is still uncertain. As for Martinez, he is certrain to stay as he is a huge part of the team’s future but his injury issues have cost United a lot this season.
The 27-year-old Christensen joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2022 when his contract at Stamford Bridge expired.
However, he has largely struggled to impress at Camp Nou despite Barcelona winning La Liga last term.
Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen, Christensen’s fellow Danes, are already at United, and they may now add a third Dane.
The other centre-back who is strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford is Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. The former Ajax defender is looking to leave the German champions in order to get more playing time and he could reunite with ten Hag at Old Trafford.
