Premier League clubs Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have all been urged to complete the signing of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.
According to former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot, who is a major admirer of Watkins’ abilities, the big clubs in the Premier League should be looking to sign the England international.
Watkins has already scored 15 goals in all competitions this season, along with his 10 assists. He has been the reason behind Unai Emery’s Aston Villa team performing well and challenging for a top-four place in the league.
Man Utd bought gifted teenager Rasmus Hojlund in the summer, but since the Denmark international had a sluggish start, the Red Devils could be better off adding a more seasoned Premier League player like Watkins.
Melchiot, who commended Watkins for being a bit of a late bloomer at this level, exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone that he would consider it a no-brainer to sign Watkins for any of those three teams.
“If I had to take any Aston Villa player out of that team and place them into Chelsea’s, I want goals, so my first thought would be Ollie Watkins,” Melchiot said.
“Top teams might have overlooked him in the past because there’s always this obsession with signing players who come in and hit the ground running immediately, whereas it’s take Watkins a bit of time to really find his feet.
“But you might look at three quality Premier League sides in Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United and ask what all of them need right now, and the answer is the same: a striker. A goal scorer. And Ollie Watkins could be exactly that.”
