According to rumors, Raphael Varane and Erik ten Hag have had discussions to try to sort things out following a “bust-up.”
This season, the Red Devils have had defensive lapses at times due to injuries sustained by Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire.
At the end of the previous season, Varane and Martinez seemed to be Ten Hag’s favoured center-back combination but injuries and form have forced Man Utd to employ a variety of lineups.
With Maguire and Martinez starting at centre defense, the Frenchman, who joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, had just a supporting role in the Red Devils’ 3-0 triumph over West Ham on Sunday as he came off the bench.
Although Jonny Evans, a free agent who joined in the summer, was supposed to serve as an emergency backup, he has started more Premier League games this season than Varane.
The Manchester United defender apparently “took umbrage with the fact that the boss left him out of the Manchester derby in October for tactical reasons,” according to Football Insider, who also claims that Varane was “unhappy” that Evans “had been selected ahead of him on multiple occasions throughout the season.”
However, the story also states that Ten Hag and Varane “have set aside their differences” after they “held clear-the-air talks” following a “bust-up,” suggesting that those disagreements appear to be behind them now.
As Varane waits to decide his Man United future—his contract expires at the end of the current campaign—it is believed that the “tense situation between them seems to have been resolved.”
