Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the Swedish forward enjoying a remarkable run of form.
Gyokeres has scored nine goals in his last three appearances and boasts a total of 23 goals in 17 games across all competitions this season, attracting the attention of top clubs across Europe.
According to The Daily Star, United and Chelsea appear to be the front-runners in the chase for Gyokeres, with The Telegraph suggesting that his transfer fee could drop to a bargain £63 million next summer.
CaughtOffside reported on Thursday that although his release clause is higher, Sporting is reportedly willing to negotiate a discount, making the 26-year-old an attractive option.
A move to the Premier League would give Gyokeres the chance to test himself in a more competitive league.
Manchester United’s potential hiring of Sporting manager Ruben Amorim could add appeal, reuniting Gyokeres with a coach familiar with his style.
However, United’s mixed track record with recent big-name transfers may give him pause, as several high-profile players, including Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho, have struggled at Old Trafford in recent years.
Chelsea, meanwhile, is also keen on adding a prolific striker, which could make Stamford Bridge an ideal destination.
However, the Blues’ instability, with frequent managerial changes and a high turnover of players, might present a risk for the Swedish star.
“These don’t seem like ideal environments for Gyokeres, so he might do well to wait and see what other opportunities come along, as he surely won’t be short of suitors from elsewhere,” the report added.
The report also mentioned that his price drop could spark a bidding war, allowing Gyokeres to carefully consider his next move, whether in the Premier League or beyond.
