Manchester United face the possibility of losing ‘very important’ star Scott McTominay, after Everton reportedly launched an official transfer enquiry.
Erik ten Hag is a huge fan of the Scotland international midfielder – and speaking just last month – the Dutchman outlined just how highly he rates the 27-year-old.
But the Red Devils may end up losing McTominay, who came through the club’s academy, with Everton becoming the latest side to join the race for his signature.
The Toffees have launched an enquiry for the player, The Athletic have reported, becoming the third interested Premier League team after Fulham and Brentford.
McTominay has also attracted interest from overseas teams such as Italian club Napoli as well as Turkish duo Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. Such widespread interest suggests United could potentially be pressured into a sale or loan, especially if the player himself is keen to secure more regular playing time.
But despite the widespread interest in McTominay, Ten Hag is adamant he views the midfielder as an important player and wants him to remain at Old Trafford.
Last month, the Dutchman was quizzed about McTominay’s future and said: ‘We have very good players so there will always be an interest from other clubs.
‘When you score 10 goals in a season and also perform very good for Scotland, then there will be an interest.
‘But we want to keep him because he is a very important player for our squad.
‘What he can contribute, as we saw last season once we had our sixes available, he could play in a more advanced role and he is a highly interesting player for our team.’
Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce feels that selling McTominay would end up being a ‘big disaster’ for United.
McTominay has played a total of 253 games for United to date, conjuring up 29 goals and eight assists.
He has helped United win the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and has also earned 52 caps for Scotland.
