Manchester United have made contact with Arsenal and Chelsea transfer target Matheus Cunha to discuss a £62.5m move to Old Trafford.

Brazil international Cunha was heavily linked with a move away from Wolves during the January transfer window but in fact ended up signing a new deal at the Midlands club.

Arsenal and Chelsea were both interested in signing Cunha at the start of the year but Wolves confirmed towards the end of the window that he had penned a new contract with the club until 2029.

Cunha only signed the deal with the promise he would be sold this summer if a club met his new release clause of £62.5m.

The 25-year-old reiterated his desire to leave Molineux last month and both Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to revive their interest at the end of the season.

Manchester United have also expressed interest in a deal, according to talkSPORT, and have already made contact with the player’s agent to discuss a summer move.

It is claimed United could beat Arsenal to a deal as the Gunners have made Nico Williams their top target in that position and are also prioritising a deal for a new striker.

Cunha’s agent is expected to fly to England soon for more face-to-face talks with potential suitors, with Nottingham Forest also linked with a move back in January.

The Brazilian has made a huge impact at Wolves following his move from Atletico Madrid in 2023, scoring 29 goals across the last two seasons.

Ruben Amorim is believed to be an admirer of Cunha and views him as an ideal addition to a Manchester United side lacking quality in the final third.

Discussing his future at Wolves last month, Cunha said: ‘I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step.

‘I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential. I had a lot of offers [in January] but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it.

‘Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.’

Arsenal have been tipped to win the race to sign Cunha following Andrea Berta’s move to the Emirates Stadium.

It was ex-Atletico Madrid transfer chief Berta who helped bring Cunha to Spain in 2011 and ex-Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere believes the Italian could secure a reunion at his new club.

‘Berta knows Cunha from their time at Atletico Madrid and it could be a deal that goes through,’ he told AceOdds.

‘He’s having a great season in a team that’s struggling to fight relegation. That shows you how good he is and how quickly he’s adapted to the Premier League. He could be a good signing too.’
