Manchester United are eager to sign Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies on a free transfer next summer

Davies has developed as one of the best left-backs in European football since joining Bayern in 2018 and has now entered the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena.

Talks over a contract have stalled with Real Madrid hoping to swoop and sign the Canada international on a free transfer next year.

But United are eager to rival them for his signature.

Sky Sports Germany report United are pushing to sign Davies next summer – along with Bayern teammates Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka. The former Manchester City star is another who has entered the final year of his contract.

Davies would represent a major coup for United and also present a possible solution to an area of the pitch that has become a real problem area.

United will again be without a recognised left-back when they return to Premier League action against Brentford on Saturday with Erik ten Hag still without Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Shaw has not played for his club since February, playing for England at the Euro 2024 final in July before suffering a calf injury that has delayed his start to the season.

His injury problems have been a major concern, compounded by the absence of Malacia who has not played any football since May 2023.

The Dutchman has resumed training after a long-term knee injury but is still not being considered for first-team action. Shaw is also set to miss out for the visit of Brentford this weekend.

Erik ten Hag has been reluctant to put a timescale on Shaw’s return to action. To further complicate matters, summer signing Noussair Mazraoui is also facing a few weeks on the sidelines after undergoing a minor heart procedure.

The Morocco international has been deployed at right-back this season but his absence will likely call for Diogo Dalot, who has been deputising on the left, to switch back over to his natural role.

Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans are two options for Ten Hag at left-back this weekend.
