Manchester United are ready to step up their efforts to sign a striker and a centre-half after confirmation of a major double injury blow for Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro.

£52million signing Yoro is facing three months on the sidelines having suffered a broken metatarsal in the pre-season clash with Arsenal in California last weekend.

Hojlund was forced off in the same game with a hamstring problem that will sideline him for six weeks.

Hojlund was United’s only recognised centre forward last season, scoring 14 times in his debut campaign following his arrival from Atalanta.

To make matters worse, United suffered further injury problems in their pre-season win over Real Betis in the early hours of Thursday morning with Marcus Rashford and Antony forced off.

United had been keen to make further reinforcements to the squad with Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee also arriving this summer.

But The Daily Telegraph report United could accelerate those plans with Erik ten Hag keen on another option up top after losing Hojlund.

Brentford star Ivan Toney is named as one option being considered. The England international has just one year left on his contract in west London with the Bees hoping to get a fee of around £50m for the 28-year-old.

United had also hoped to bring in another new centre-half alongside Yoro with Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt or Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite the club’s preferred options.

United have seen two offers rejected by Everton for Branthwaite, who had reportedly agreed personal terms over a move to Old Trafford.

The club also remain in contact with Bayern over de Ligt is also keen on the move that would reunite him with former Ajax boss ten Hag.

United’s latest bid for the Netherlands international was £30m, rejected by Bayern who are looking for a fee of £42m.

United take on Manchester City in the new season’s Community Shield curtain raiser on 10 August with their Premier League campaign underway against Fulham in just over two weeks.
