The battle is burning between Manchester City and the Premier League. Despite 6 coronations in the last 7 seasons of the English championship, the Sky Blues are in the eye of the storm. The reason ? 115 charges of violating Premier League regulations and financial rules. A hearing is also scheduled for next Monday and should last two weeks at the end of which we will know who has won the standoff between Manchester City and the Premier League. The team coached by Pep Guardiola risks heavy sanctions such as significant fines, withdrawal of points for the next season or administrative relegation. While the body which manages the English first division drew its attention, the response quickly arrived from the Mancunian team.
Indeed, the Sky Blues have decided to respond by filing a complaint against the Premier League as revealed The Times. The Emirati-flagged team submitted a 165-page legal document claiming to be discriminated against and described the rules imposed as a “tyranny of the majority” as their rivals pushed for the rules in order to stifle their sporting success. These rules come from a reform dating from December 2021 shortly after the takeover of Newcastle United by Saudi Arabia. These aim to prevent clubs from inflating the commercial agreements they have with partners, especially if the latter are linked to the club’s owners.
A schism within the Premier League
A point of contention which makes the conflict all the more important for the outcome of the Premier League. If Manchester City ever wins its case, this could offer much more latitude to partners in their sponsorship contracts. Without an assessment of the Premier League, this will allow abuses such as artificially inflated contracts to offer more financial power to clubs. This prompted between 10 and 12 Premier League clubs to get behind the championship with supporting evidence and witnesses.
Manchester City, for its part, received the support of another club which sided with it according to the English media. The Mancunians are also claiming damages for losses suffered due to the rules put in place which they consider illegal. The amount chosen and the share of revenue that did not arrive following delayed and canceled projects would amount to several tens of millions of euros. From June 10 to 21, the Manchester City-Premier League conflict may well be in the news and risks creating a major upheaval for English football.
