Manchester City no longer pursuing Barcelona academy ace, but Chelsea could make summer move

It is no secret that Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde’s season has been rather disappointing so far.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last time out, even displacing Jordi Alba as the first-choice left-back. It was followed by a new and improved long-term contract with a €1 billion release clause and the #3 shirt previously worn by club legend Gerard Pique.

But, Balde’s performances have been a major letdown so far this term, which even led to him being benched on a couple of occasions in favour of Joao Cancelo.

Manager Xavi has placed him in an almost winger’s position but the La Masia graduate has not been able to exploit his offensive qualities and has suffered a lot in defence, despite being one of the fastest players in the squad.

Balde has interest in the Premier League

As per SPORT, Barcelona see Balde as an important asset for the present and the future which is why they handed him a long contract with a mammoth €1 billion release clause.

It is because the La Masia prodigy is a player who is very much liked in the Premier League.

In fact, the report suggests that Manchester City held an interest in Balde and were even considering asking for him as part of the deal that would see Cancelo sign for Barcelona permanently.

The Cityzens are looking for a new left-back and saw the Barça talent as an option. However, the report goes on to claim that the Premier League champions are no longer pursuing the left-back at this point.

Instead, Pep Guardiola’s men intend to ask for only cash for Cancelo and not have Balde enter the operation.

Chelsea could be interested

However, while Manchester City might no longer be interested, another Premier League bigwig, Chelsea, could be eyeing a move for Balde.

The Blues have been long linked with the left-back for quite some time now and they could consider making a summer swoop in the summer.

It must be remembered that Barcelona might need to make a major sale in the summer to generate revenue. Balde, given the interest he is garnering, could be a candidate.
