Manchester City’s surprising move to replace Julián Álvarez

Stability is the choice Manchester City made at the start of the season. While a few second-stringers like Kalvin Phillips (Ipswich Town), Yan Couto (Borussia Dortmund), Tommy Doyle (Wolverhampton), Sergio Gomez (Real Sociedad) and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Southampton) have left, the English club also recorded the sale of Julian Alvarez to Atlético Madrid for 75 million euros excluding bonuses. With 116 million euros collected this summer, Pep Guardiola’s team has built up a small war chest and yet has only recorded one arrival: that of Savio, from Troyes after a successful loan to Girona last season.

But the recent departure of Julián Álvarez will encourage Cityzens to take action to find his replacement. With only Erling Haaland as a center forward, the Sky Blues would therefore like to acquire an additional center forward capable of supporting him and have set their sights on a player from Celtic Glasgow. According to The AthleticKyogo Furuhashi is part of the list of the four-time reigning English champions to replace the Argentinian. A rather surprising name since if the latter is a reference in the Premiership, his experience at the very highest level remains relative with only 12 Champions League matches (2 goals and 1 assist) to his name.

Also shunned by the Japanese selection, the 29-year-old player has only 21 caps for only 5 goals and has not played in the 2022 World Cup or the 2024 Asian Cup. Since his arrival in Scotland in 2021, he has scored 73 goals in 135 games. While he is under contract until 2027 with the Scottish club, the site Transfermarkt values him at 14 million euros. According to the English-language media, City are scrutinizing the 29-year-old Japanese player as well as another younger profile. In addition to signing a replacement for Erling Haaland, the Sky Blues finalize the return of İlkay Gündoğan.

Manchester City’s approach satisfies the Japanese who would obviously be happy to take a step forward in his career by joining the 2023 European Champions. The hardest part would therefore be to reach an agreement with Celtic Glasgow, but Manchester City’s finances will not be a hindrance. For the moment, the Sky Blues have made the İlkay Gündoğan file their priority, but once this operation is completed, they will accelerate on the native of Ikoma.
