Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo is one of Barcelona’s main targets heading into the final stages of the transfer window.

The Blaugrana, with the help of superagent Jorge Mendes, are working on his signing and everything indicates that there could be an agreement with the Premier League champions for a loan with a non-mandatory option to buy.

Manchester City do not want to keep a player who is not part of Pep Guardiola’s plans and even though there are other clubs interested, the Portuguese full-back only wants Barcelona.

As such, the probability of a transfer in the closing days of the summer transfer window is high, although Barça will need Cancelo to take another step if he wishes to return.

Cancelo must accept a pay cut

Indeed, according to SPORT, Joao Cancelo must lower his salary if he is to return to Barcelona on loan from Manchester City this summer.

Barça, with the salary limit saturated, cannot assume the full amount of his salary and the Cityzens are not willing to collaborate.

As such, it will have to be the right-back himself who will have to accept the salary reduction – something he did last summer – if he wants to return to Barcelona.

Cancelo has a salary of €14 million gross per season between fixed and variables, but Barça cannot meet that figure and want to pay less owing to their salary limit situation.

Furthermore, the Blaugrana also do not intend to pay any loan fees to Manchester City for the signing either.

All these stipulations are currently being discussed even as Barcelona await the departures of some players so as to create room for Cancelo, who they want as the first-choice right-back in Hansi Flick’s team.
