Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains under intense pressure after the club’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, leaving the team 14th in the Premier League table.
With only one win in their last five matches, the Reds’ lacklustre performance has raised serious concerns about the Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford.
Following a 3-3 Europa League draw at Porto, where United surrendered a 2-0 lead, and a devastating 3-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur, the club’s hierarchy is reportedly considering a managerial change.
According to ESPN in a post last week Monday, Ten Hag is under immense pressure following the home defeat to Spurs.
“There is now a real possibility that Ten Hag is entering the final days of his reign as United manager,” ESPN reported, noting that both the Europa League clash against Porto on Thursday and the Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday could be decisive.
Manchester Evening News reports Monday that former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel is being lined up to potentially replace Ten Hag if the club decides to part ways with him.
A crucial meeting is set to take place in London on Tuesday, where Manchester United officials will discuss Ten Hag’s future amid the club’s poor start to the season.
The Dutch manager, who took charge in 2022, is expected to meet with members of the board in the coming days to address the current situation.
Despite the mounting speculation, Ten Hag remained calm when questioned about his future following the draw at Villa Park.
He stated, “We communicate very openly and transparently. I talk with the club’s officials daily, and after every game, I focus on my job with the players. I expect to have discussions with the hierarchy soon.”
Meanwhile, Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich after the 2023 season, is a free agent and could step in immediately if United opts for a change.
Tuchel was previously considered by the club over the summer as they contemplated their future following a disappointing EPL campaign.
As fans and pundits await the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting, the pressure continues to build on Ten Hag as the Reds face the possibility of a mid-season managerial shake-up.
