Manchester United have confirmed two key changes to the captaincy contingent at Old Trafford.

Following the departure of long-serving skipper Katie Zelem in June, Marc Skinner has had to carefully consider which Red would take the armband in her absence.

Zelem, who left United upon her contract expiry, has since opted for a United States switch. She signed for NWSL outfit Angel City in August on a two-year deal after six years with the Red Devils, tallying 32 goals and 46 assists in 161 appearances.

Now, formidable centre-half Maya Le Tissier has been promoted to club captain ahead of the 2024/2025 Women’s Super League campaign kicking off in mid-September.

The 22-year-old joined United from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022 and proceeded to make an immediate impact when scoring twice on her maiden outing against Reading. Last term, her dependable partnership with Millie Turner culminated with a record 14 clean sheets at the end of the season.

Reacting to her well-deserved promotion, Le Tissier told club media: “It’s an honour to be named captain of this great football club, and I will wear the armband with real pride to help drive this team to success on and off the field.”

Fellow England international Ella Toone, meanwhile, has become vice-captain. Both Reds were jointly named Players’ Player of the Year at the beginning of the summer.

United Women kick off their season at home to West Ham on September 21 in a 12pm kick-off.
