Manchester United striker Joe Hugill is set to join Wigan Athletic on loan.
The 20-year-old striker, who recently spoke about Ruud van Nistelrooy’s immediate impact on players as a coach, was due to be included in the United pre-season tour squad.
That is no longer the case because Hugill is on the verge of joining League One side Wigan on loan for the upcoming campaign, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The former Sunderland youth player scored in United’s 2-0 win over Rangers at Murrayfield last weekend. He also played 45 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg a few days prior.
Hugill is under contract at United until 2026, including the option of an additional year. He made the bench on four occasions under Erik ten Hag last season but has yet to feature in a competitive game for the club.
It makes sense for United to send Hugill on loan since he is currently behind several players in the pecking order including Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Ethan Wheatley.
