Former Manchester United manager José Mourinho could play a decisive role in Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman was expected to be sacked before the October international break, but INEOS has remained confident in the former Ajax manager. Man Utd have suffered their worst start to a Premier League season, picking up just eight points from their opening seven matches, but the Red Devils opted to continue with Ten Hag after handing him a contract extension in July.

A 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday eased the pressure on Ten Hag, but he has yet to secure his future at Old Trafford with rumors linking the club to the likes of Ruben Amorim, Zinedine Zidane and Graham Potter. Additionally, his time at Manchester United could potentially end because of ‘The Special One’.

Will José Mourinho “fire” Erik ten Hag?

Mourinho is now in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahce and his team host Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday evening. The Red Devils have picked up just two points from their first two games in the competition, thanks to draws against Twente and Porto, while Fenerbahce currently have four points.

The Süper Lig side have lost just two of their 14 games in all competitions this season and Mourinho could make Ten Hag suffer by claiming all three points in midweek.

Ten Hag has merit thanks to his two league successes in his first two seasons at Old Trafford, but he could well be sacked if Manchester United’s poor start to the season continues. Of course, main target Thomas Tuchel is no longer on the market, having taken over as England manager, but Man Utd could potentially pull the trigger if Ten Hag suffered a heavy defeat against Fenerbahce of Mourinho on Thursday.
