Manchester United will wait until the international break before making a decision on Erik ten Hag’s future.
Manchester United players would welcome the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy as first-team manager, if Erik ten Hag is sacked, according to the Daily Star.
The chances of Ten Hag being axed as United manager are high after a slow start to the season. Reports suggest the Dutchman has two games to save his job before the October international break gets underway.
First up, it’s FC Porto away in the Europa League. Then United will travel again to face Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Ten Hag is clinging on to his job and the only way to save it is by winning football matches. Something he has failed to do consistently for over a year, but it needs to happen now if he has any chance of remaining as manager for the rest of the season.
United have gone three games without a win and are currently four points ahead of the Premier League relegation zone.
It is understood that if Ten Hag is dismissed, the squad would encourage club chiefs to give the job to Van Nistelrooy.
That suggests Van Nistelrooy has been a positive addition to the club since returning as first-team coach.
The report outlines that Simone Inzaghi is the bookies favourite to replace Ten Hag, while Gareth Southgate is also well liked by United.
Southgate is available after leaving his job as England manager following Euro 2024.
Reports elsewhere suggest Van Nistelrooy is ‘open’ to the idea of succeeding Ten Hag as United manager. The former United striker won the Dutch Cup during his only season in management at PSV Eindhoven.
Van Nistelrooy has been tipped to take the job on an interim basis until the end of the season as part of United’s contingency plan.
