Manchester United are giving greater consideration to the appointment of Julian Nagelsmann this summer following the dismal draw to Brentford on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag’s side were battered by the Bees in north-west London and somehow left with a share of the spoils.

The performance, more than the result, is said to have unnerved decision-makers at Old Trafford.

It came after United’s fantastic 4-3 win against Liverpool in the FA Cup, which should have meant the side were full of confidence.

But while the performance was poor, the result means United are now firm outsiders to finish in the Champions League positions.

And that could be enough to see Ten Hag sacked.

Options are thin on the ground, particularly as the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also searching for a new coach.

But the Independent say Nagelsmann, the Germany boss, is of increasing interest to United.

The former Bayern boss has transformed Germany’s play in less than a year at the helm of the national side.

While his time at Bayern Munich was difficult, he was the most coveted coach in world football after his work with RB Leipzig.

Leipzig knocked United out of the Champions League in 2021, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge and Nagelsmann was at the club.

Nagelsmann contract runs until after the Euros, when he will lead his country into a host tournament.

Germany have offered him a new deal, but Nagelsmann wants to assess his options.

That depends a bit on the offer. Generally speaking, I’m of course happy when the protagonists are satisfied with the coaching staff,’ said Nagelsmann.

‘It’s not impossible, but it’s not a given either. The focus is on the Euros.’
