The race for Premier League top six is closing in.
In only seven days time we reach the end of this 2023/24 season.
A race to the wire and so many twists and turns.
For some time now it had looked a three way contest between Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United.
These most recent results though having a major impact on how the Premier League top six chase now looks…
Saturday 27 April – Manchester United 1 Burnley 1
Saturday 27 April – Newcastle United 5 Sheff Utd 1
Saturday 27 April – Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 2
Thursday 2 May – Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0
Saturday 4 May – Burnley 1 Newcastle 4
Sunday 5 May – Chelsea 5 West Ham 0
Monday 6 May – Crystal Palace 4 Manchester United 0
Saturday 11 May – Newcastle 1 Brighton 1
Saturday 11 May – Forest 2 Chelsea 3
This is now the updated Premier League table on Sunday (12 May 2024) morning:
Newcastle United having to battle for a point against Brighton on Saturday.
Whilst Chelsea led at Forest, went 2-1 down on 74 minutes, only for goals on 80 and 82 minutes to see Pochettino’s side grab all three points.
At the point when Chelsea were losing with only around ten minutes to go, that would have meant Newcastle only needing to beat Man U on Wednesday to guarantee sixth place.
A lot of ‘what ifs’ but fact remains that the point yesterday keeps Newcastle United in control. Whatever happens in other matches immaterial if Eddie Howe’s side beat both Man U and Brentford.
Next up of course is Man U at home today to Arsenal, where if as expected Arsenal get all three points for their title challenge, then surely minimal chance of Erik ten Hag’s side still standing a chance of getting top six.
The bookies certainly seem to see it that way…
Listed below are the now updated general Premier League odds available from the various bookies to finish top six this 2023/24 season (in brackets what the odds were before Saturday’s matches):
1/1 Newcastle United (4/7)
1/1 Chelsea (11/4)
12/1 Manchester United (8/1)
As you can see, the bookies make Man U 12/1 rank outsiders now. Those odds will get significantly bigger if Arsenal win at Old Trafford today.
So Newcastle United now seen as absolutely neck and neck with Chelsea.
Wednesday night looks massive…
These are all the remaining fixtures for the three clubs fighting for Premier League top six:
Sunday 12 May – Man U v Arsenal
Wednesday 15 May – Man U v Newcastle, Brighton v Chelsea
Sunday 19 May – Brentford v Newcastle, Brighton v Man U, Chelsea v Bournemouth
Due to their goal difference superiority over Chelsea (10 goals worse off) and Man U (25 goals worse off!), Newcastle United knowing that if they end up level on points with either of their rivals, then all but guaranteed to finish above them.
