Manchester United have held initial talks over a new contract for Kobbie Mainoo.

The 18-year-old academy graduate has broken into the United first team this season, with 13 appearances so far. I suspect Mainoo would have more games under his belt if he didn’t miss the start of the campaign due to an injury he sustained against Real Madrid during pre-season.

That unfortunate knock forced the young midfielder to miss the first three months of the season.

However, since his return from injury, Mainoo has been a crucial asset to Erik ten Hag’s midfield and is now probably one of the first names on the team sheet.

Alejandro Garnacho was the breakthrough star last season and he ended up signing a new deal until 2028. Now, United want to give Mainoo a new deal with improved terms.

According to Fabrizio Romano via X, a new contract will include an improved salary to reflect his importance to the first team.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained: “They are already preparing a new deal for Kobbie. It is not an urgent situation. Man United are not forced to do it as soon as possible, but they want to do it this year in 2024.

“They want Kobbie to be one of the faces of the project for present and future. An important talent with an important salary. There will be a rise in terms of salary, they want to make him feel important.”
