Manchester United are demanding a €50 million (£42.7m) transfer fee for Barcelona target Mason Greenwood, according to reports in Spain.

Greenwood has spent the season on loan in La Liga with Getafe after United opted to allow the forward to leave Old Trafford in the final hour of last summer’s transfer window.

The 22-year-old has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into the first-team squad before the club received major backlash over his return.

However, United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has left the door open for Greenwood’s return and has said a new decision will be made over the forward’s future at Old Trafford.

Earlier this week, United’s football director, John Murtough, and head of director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, met with Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, and two CAA Base agents, Frank Tramboli and Fede Massai, in Barcelona.

It’s understood that Barcelona have already identified Greenwood as a potential summer signing and have made an initial approach over the forward’s interest in a move to Camp Nou.

According to Marca, United are open to selling Greenwood but will demand a €50m (£42.7m) fee. The Premier League club are also refusing to rule out of possibility of extending Greenwood’s stay at Getafe, although his current contract expires at the end of next season.

Greenwood, meanwhile, is said to be keen on playing for a Champions League club but would also welcome another season at Getafe due to the positive relationships he has built with the club.

The 22-year-old has been one of Getafe’s standout performers in La Liga this season with six goals and five assists so far.
