Joshua Zirkzee opened his international account for the Netherlands on Saturday night, but the Manchester United forward still wants to build on his performance and improve.

It was Zirkzee’s third appearance for the Netherlands as they kicked off their UEFA Nations League campaign in style. Bosnia-Herzegovina were unlikely to be a match for the Dutch, but the match finished 5-2 in Eindhoven.

United fans will be happy with Zirkzee’s contributions on the night. The 23-year-old not only scored his first international goal, but he also registered an assist as he set up Tijjani Reijnders to make it 2-1.

Speaking to UEFA after the match, Zirkzee explained how proud he is to have scored his first goal for the Netherlands.

Zirkzee said: “Yes, very proud, a proud moment.

“My family was here, my grandparents came to watch me for the first time in a very long time, so it was a great day for all of us.

“Obviously Bosnia-Herzegovina defended in their own half and it was up to us to look for combinations and to find each other, and we could have been even more clinical today even though we did a great job. So overall I think it was OK.”

The other goalscorers include Cody Gakpo, Wout Weghorst and Xavi Simmons. Bosnia’s goals came from Ermedin Demirovic and Edin Dzeko.

Zirkzee gave a separate interview for Dutch TV which included a critical assessment of his performance.

“It went OK, I feel like I made a couple of mistakes,” he added (via 90min). “I could have another assist for Reijnders. We had a good ‘click’ during the game.”

Next up for the Netherlands is a game against Germany on Tuesday.
