Manchester United’s sensational 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo has been called up to England’s senior squad for the first time, boosting his chances of selection for Euro 2024.

Mainoo was initially part of the U21s squad but has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s group, having previously represented England at U17 and U19 level.

My immediate reaction to this news is that I am not surprised, but I don’t think Southgate should be rushing him into the senior team. They should let Mainoo focus on his development at United by waiting to introduce the young midfielder until Euro 2024 is finished.

United took to X expressing the club’s pride at Mainoo’s call-up, writing: “So, so deserved.”

So, so deserved.

I mean, why rush him into the senior setup?

Mainoo is enjoying his football as a first-team regular at United. He’s good enough for senior football and nobody is saying otherwise, but the call-up seems a bit unnecessary right now.

We would like to congratulation Mainoo on the latest milestone in his professional career.
