Manchester United have one player in the Premier League team of the week after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with title-chasing Liverpool. At the same time, Arsenal dominated with three players after a convincing win away at Brighton.
Fans witnessed another chaotic United performance during the weekend. Still, one player who has been thriving through it all is teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo, who scored his first senior goal at Old Trafford against the Scousers.
We can’t overlook how disjointed we’ve been this season and it was evident yet again when Jurgen Klopp’s side came to Old Trafford. The German coach will leave Anfield at the end of the season after failing to beat Erik ten Hag’s team at Old Trafford on three separate occasions.
The 2-2 draw puts a dent in Liverpool’s title hopes, although it took United until half-time to wake up. Bruno Fernandes and Mainoo scored two wonderful goals in the second half to make it 2-1, however, the Reds conceded a penalty towards the end as the points were split.
As a result, Mainoo was selected for the BBC team of the week by Garth Crooks, who noted: “The good news for United is midfield Mainoo is getting better with every game.”
Premier League team of the week: Pickford; Van de Ven; Saliba, Gabriel; Guimaraes, Mainoo; Rice, De Bruyne; Morris, Calvert-Lewin, Watkins.
Mainoo’s emergence gives United fans something to feel positive about for the future. We have an extremely talented young player that the team could be built around for years to come.
That said, we must have patience and let him develop without undermining the pressure that comes with representing the biggest football club in the Premier League.
