Manchester United’s hopes of signing Mathys Tel this summer are all but over after the striker signed a new deal at Bayern Munich.
The Frenchman was heavily linked with an exit from the Allianz Arena, after failing to find a first team spot under Thomas Tuchel.
United registered their interest in February, with Erik ten Hag keen to sign help for Rasmus Hojlund.
Tel was contemplating his future in Bavaria, particularly if Tuchel retained his job at the club.
But Bayern confirmed a fortnight ago that Tuchel will step down at the end of the season.
The club immediately sought to tie Tel down to a new deal and he’s signed fresh terms until 2029.
‘When you play for Bayern, you always want to win every trophy,’ said Tel.
‘I want to score and set up goals, play with heart and energy for Bayern, and give everything for this club and its fans.’
United, whether they are led by Ten Hag or not next season, will look to sign a new striker this summer.
Anthony Martial will be released at the end of the season when his contract expires, while Jadon Sancho is also likely to leave.
The club’s transfer window could be dependent on their finish to the season, with United needing to qualify for the Champions League to alleviate Financial Fair Play burdens.
