Manchester United have been told to strengthen their forward line in January with a move for in-form Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.

The Red Devils invested in their attacking options during the summer but youngster Joshua Zirkzee has found it difficult to make an instant impact.

Rasmus Hojlund has made an impressive contribution in recent weeks following his return from injury but Ten Hag will not want to rely so heavily on a player who has struggled to maintain fitness over the course of his Old Trafford career so far.

Neutrals, meanwhile, feared Brentford might struggle this season after deciding to part company with their former talisman Ivan Toney, but Mbeumo has stepped up to the plate and is enjoying a stellar campaign.

The Cameroon international scored two more goals in Saturday’s thrilling 4-3 win over Ipswich to take his tally to the season to eight and former United defender Mikaël Silvestre believes the 25-year-old would prove to be a shrewd addition.

‘What Bryan Mbeumo has been doing for Brentford is a credit to him because things were never going to be easy when it came to replacing the goals of Ivan Toney,’ he told Norske Bettingsider.

‘I do think that top clubs like Manchester United should be keeping a close eye on his progress this season, it’s a big time in his career at the age of 25 to see if he can make that step up.

‘I think it’s a decisive season for him personally and I think he’d have the character to be a success at Old Trafford. I can’t see him going to Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City yet, but he is full of confidence.’

Thomas Frank, meanwhile, lauded Brentford’s ‘fantastic comeback’ after Mbeumo’s winner in second-half added-time helped seal victory/

Mbeumo’s second, which came with 96 minutes on the clock, arrived after Brentford had initially fought back from two goals down against opposition seeking a first win of the season.

Speaking after the victory, Frank said: ‘We’re in the entertainment business so we thought we would give you something for the money. It’s easier to be on the end of the win than being Kieran (McKenna); I feel for him and he’s working as hard as me.

‘I thought they were better than us in the first 40 minutes and they were up 2-0. On the flip side we were bad and it was some of the worst 40 minutes of us in the Premier League.

‘We showed great mentality, great personality and it was a fantastic comeback in many ways. Football is relentless.’

Mbeumo’s double made it eight in nine matches and Frank talked up the ‘impressive’ forward.

When asked if Mbeumo should be considered one of the league’s best, Frank added: ‘I hope they do that. How many goals is it now, eight in nine games? That’s hugely impressive from a winger in a team in the middle of the Premier League, that’s not normal.’
