Respected transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Manchester United’s search for a new striker this summer.

Manchester United signed 21-year-old striker Rasmus Hojlund and the young Dane has been our only recognised centre-forward for a lot of this season. It hasn’t helped that Anthony Martial is rarely available for selection.

Hojlund took a while to adjust his game to the Premier League, failing to score in his first 14 appearances, he has been in top form since the start of 2024 and United missed his presence when he missed Saturday’s defeat to Fulham due to an injury.

With seven goals in his last six league games, United finally have a centre-forward they can rely on – but Ten Hag doesn’t have enough depth in the attacking department to fill the void when he’s out injured.

It would also benefit Hojlund’s development to have stronger competition in the squad.

According to Fabrizio Romano, as per CaughtOffside, United will be in the market for a new striker this summer, but they have yet to decide whether they want to target another young striker or one with more experience.

“Man United are also planning to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window – the plan is very clear, they are waiting for a new director and a new board structure, but they want a new number 9.

“They will obviously respect the great numbers of Rasmus Hojlund and he will remain at the club, but one more striker is needed because Anthony Martial will leave Old Trafford as a free agent, there are no doubts about that.

“United still have to decide, however, if they want to go for a young player or an experienced player. There will be internal discussions about that, and United will take their time despite rumours about Joshua Zirkzee and Mathys Tel. We’ll see what they decide in the coming weeks and months, but for sure a new striker will be a core part of their plans for the summer.”

Romano added: “Personally, I think Hojlund still has huge potential and I’ve been so impressed with his performances recently, so maybe an experienced striker who knows the league could help to make an instant impact and also to support Hojlund while he’s still developing.”
