It could be a while if we ever see another season of Mare of Easttown, assuming creator Brad Ingelsby finds the right kind of story to bring back Kate Winslet’s beloved character.
While promoting his upcoming show Task that takes place in the same Pennsylvania county that Mare was based, Ingelsby seemed to suggest that he couldn’t promise more of the crime drama miniseries that hit it big in 2021.
But he’s not completely closing the door, either.
“We’re always open to revisiting Mare. I would welcome the chance if we could craft the story,” Ingelsby told reporters as an HBO press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles. “Mare’s journey was so emotional and it was hard to come up with an emotional story. It’s hard to come up with one that could compete with losing a son and having to confront that. There are a lot of plotlines we could explore … I want to give Mare some space before we build up another emotional trauma. That’s hard to jump back into.”
Inglesby’s new drama Task follows an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) who heads a task force that’s trying to end a string of drug-house robberies led by an unsuspecting family man. It co-stars Martha Plimpton and Mireille Enos. It’s expected to drop in 2025.
Inglesby added that the story in Task — which also takes place in a working class community — was never considered as a possible sequel to Mare.
