Margaret Qualley had to embellish her resume for a chance to work with one of her onscreen favorites.
The actress revealed that her husband Jack Antonoff “lied” to Adam Sandler about her golfing experience level as he advocated for her to join the cast of his upcoming Netflix sequel Happy Gilmore 2 after the original 1996 comedy was her “favorite movie” and its star was her “first crush.”
“I saw that there was gonna to be a Happy Gilmore 2 and I emailed my agents right away and I said, ‘Anything it takes — no part is too small. Please. I gotta be a part of this, I’m begging you. Please. Whatever it takes,'” recalled Qualley on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Host Jimmy Fallon then displayed a text exchange between Antonoff and Sandler, in which the latter asked, “Does your wife golf at all,” to which the Bleachers frontman responded, “yea she’s actually good.”
“What a good husband. And I can’t golf,” said Qualley. “He lied for the sake of the family. … I never golfed a day in my life. I’m terrible, actually.”
Qualley said she “took some lessons, but mostly, I’m still bad.”
The Golden Globe nominee said her role in Happy Gilmore 2 was “the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” noting: “It’s a tiny part. I’m essentially deep background, but I can die happy now.”
Sandler kicked off production on Happy Gilmore 2 earlier this month in New Jersey, sharing a photo of his titular character’s Boston Bruins hockey jersey on a wardrobe rack. “It ain’t over. The way I see it… we’ve only just begun,” he wrote at the time.
In addition to Sandler, Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald are reprising their roles for the sequel, which also features Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, Benny Safdie, Lee Trevino, Carl Weathers and Bob Barker.
