Margaret Qualley says filming “The Substance” left her with a “f–ked up” face full of acne.
The actress — who portrays a character named Sue in the body horror film — recalled her experience of having to wear prosthetics on a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
“At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so f–ked up,” Qualley said, adding, “They couldn’t shoot my face anymore.”
However, the irritation did come in handy when she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she plays four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. One of them suffers from acne — so there was no need for Qualley to wear makeup for those scenes.

That was just my acne from the prosthetics,” the “Poor Things” star confessed. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is kind of perfect. I’m playing all these different characters. For one of them, we’ll use all my crazy prosthetic acne.’”
The actress, 30, added, “It took me probably a year to recover physically from all of it.”
In “The Substance”— which is in select theaters and streaming on Mubi now — Qualley plays a younger version of fading aerobics celebrity Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore). After being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) for being too old, Sparkle turns to the black market for an illicit drug that creates a younger version of herself with grotesque side effects.

“Demi and I worked so hard on this for like … it was a five-month shoot,” Qualley recalled of working with her co-star, 62. “It was super intense.”
She added, “It was at once rewarding and painful. I’m so grateful for the life ‘The Substance’ is having.”
