According to a statement shared by the Pleasant Police Department via Facebook on Tuesday, September 24, the 32-year-old has been charged with first-degree attempted murder “amongst other charges.”
Additionally, the department noted that the mother was “awaiting to see a commissioner.”
On Wednesday, September 25, Brown reportedly appeared in court and requested to be placed on home detention, per WTOP. The outlet reports that a judge refused her request and ordered she be held in custody without bond.
Here’s What The Maryland Mother Allegedly Did To Her 13-Year-Old Daughter
According to the police department’s statement, authorities responded to the shooting incident on Monday, September 23, around 4:50 p.m.
“Upon arrival, officers found a 13-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body,” the department’s statement asserts.
Subsequently, the teenager was taken to a nearby hospital, reportedly in critical condition. Furthermore, upon an initial investigation, authorities learned that Brown “used a firearm within the home to shoot the victim.”
Per WTOP, the 13-year-old informed police that she and her mother got into an argument. Brown was allegedly holding a gun when the interaction turned physical. According to the 13-year-old, afterward, her mother shot her as she walked down a set of stairs.
“[the 13-year-old victim] suffered a single defect to the rear portion of her neck,” court documents reportedly asserted.
According to the outlet, Brown instructed her daughter to “say she was shot by someone who had broken into the home.” Once cops arrived, the mother allegedly gave them conflicting statements about what occurred.
How Is The Child Doing?
As of Monday, September 23, the 13-year-old was reportedly in stable condition, per WTOP. On Wednesday, she was reportedly able to walk around her hospital unit. However, doctors remain concerned her injury could paralyze her, per NBC Washington.
“It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart-wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector,” Acting Seat Pleasant police Chief Cedric Heyward stated, per Facebook. “I am glad to hear that the victim is recovering at a hospital, but the emotional trauma will remain for some time.”
According to NBC Washington, Brown called her daughter’s father from jail on Wednesday, September 25.
“Attempted first-degree murder? Come on, you know this isn’t me,” she reportedly said, allegedly adding that the cause would disappear if their daughter did not appear in court.
Per Ashley Sowls, an Assistant Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, Brown did not “express any concern for how her child is doing.”
WUSA9 reports that Brown has not entered a plea for her charges. However, she is scheduled to appear in court on October 25.
